David-
In the grim, dark future there is only... roleplaying!
For decades, the dark, gritty, gothic sci-fi universe of Warhammer 40,000 has only been available to gamers through wargaming, but no more! With last year’s release of Dark Heresy, (and the 4th quarter 2009 release of it’s sister game, Rogue Trader on the way!) players can now experience the unique setting of 40K in a new ligh… or rather, Dark.
In Dark Heresy, players take on the role of an acolyte in the Inquisition. This is somewhat akin to being an MI-6 or CIA agent, but instead of fighting terrorism and crime, you protect the Imperium of Mankind from corruption, dangerous psykers, aliens and demons.
In the tried and true fashion of role-playing games everywhere, each player takes control of one character, except for the Game Master (GM). The GM controls the fate of these players, pitching them headlong into an interactive story of his or her devising. The players then interact with the world they find themselves in, with the GM determining the main plot turns, but the players, and their die rolls, deciding how each event plays out.
While there are a number of expansion books and adventure modules available for Dark Heresy, as well as decades of fluff and stories for the 40K universe to draw on, the core rulebook provides plenty of material to use in play. At almost 400 pages, with tons of character types, abilities, equipment, enemies and even a quick-start adventure included, this book is a beast! While characters are limited to keeping the class type they choose at the beginning of the game, a great deal of flexibility is built into character progression, and this is even further expanded upon in some of the expansion booklets.
Dark Heresy is filled to the brim with it’s unique, dark, fantasy/sci-fi, heavy metal flavor. If you like role-playing anything from political intrigue, to nail-biting tense alien hunts, to full-fledged warfare, Dark Heresy is the game for you!
