Game Daze Tucson Mall Manager Recommendation, November 2011
Gerri -
“Take us to your leader!” is what you'll all be saying when you play Tasty Minstrels' new game, Martian Dice.
Ever have that moment waiting at the doctor's office or where you share the awkward lull in conversation at dinner with friends? Martian Dice is a quick, purse size solution to your problem. All 13 dice come in a compact tube and they display all you need for fun. If you can be the first “alien” to collect 25 specimens, you win.
This is a game of push your luck. Every time you roll the dice you must wager which dice to pull aside, which to re-roll and deal with the ones you MUST keep. You have 3 types of specimens you can collect... humans (in blue), cows (in white) and chickens (in yellow). There are also those pesky army Tanks (in red) that are trying to defend this puny planet and you must keep all of these dice that you roll. But, we are not defenseless here in the outer reaches of space... for we have DEATH RAYS (in green) and you can keep as many of these as you like.
Now, every time you roll dice, you can choose to keep only one color at a time (other than the pesky tanks of course that you have to keep). So, if I decide to keep the 4 cows and must keep the 1 tank I will re-roll the 8 remaining dice. On the 2nd roll, I cannot collect any more cows regardless of how many of the juicy bovines that may be wandering aimlessly in front of me. I must then choose between chickens, humans or Death Rays. Keep in mind, that by the end of my valid opportunities to roll dice, I must have Death Rays that meet or exceed the number of Tanks or I am not successful at defending my superior species.
Back to my 2nd roll then...
So, I now have 2 more Tanks (for an accumulative total of 3), 1 cow, 2 chickens, 1 human and 2 Death Rays. The cow is forfeit, 1 human isn't enough, 2 chickens are tempting but, I will keep my Death Rays to be safe. 3rd re-roll I get 1 chicken and 3 Death Rays. Not much of a choice for I will keep my Death Rays (for an accumulative total of 5) because I can keep as many as I like. Last roll of one die and I get a chicken. My tally reads:
- Tanks: 3
- Death Rays: 5
- Cows: 4
- Chickens: 1
- Humans: 0
The Tanks and Death Rays cancel each other and I get 5 points for my specimens. Had things been slightly different and I was able to get at least 1 of all 3 specimen types I would receive 3 bonus points or, had I not met or exceeded the number of Tanks with my Death Rays I would have gone bust and received NO POINTS for my turn. Play continues until some lucky wanna-be E.T. gets to 25 first.
This game is fast, easy to teach kids, easy to play with board game geeks and lots of fun for the 20 minutes it takes to play. It may end up in a stocking this year (it's the perfect size for it). Now, if you'll excuse me, the Mother Ship is calling...
