Blake -
"An unladen swallow flies across the gray skies of Brittany... The forces of Evil are gathering around Camelot - The Black Knight was sighted atop a desolate ridge; a scheming Morgan plots her revenge; Saxon troops are on the move; and acres of timber are being felled for the siege engines. Lancelot has all but vanished, Excaliber is still to be recovered, and the Holy Grail remains just a legend. These are troubling times indeed..."
It sounds like any other of a hundred strategy games that exist in the world, but Shadows Over Camelot has one unique twist: it's a cooperative game. That's right, instead of competing against one another, you and your company of brave knights (or friends whichever are closer at hand) are battling against the game! Play as King Arthur, Sir Gawain, or Sir Percival, just to name a few. Search for the Holy Grail, battle a mighty dragon, fight off invading hordes of Picts and Saxons, and be in a joust are just some of the things you must experience if you are to keep Camelot safe. Whether or not you will be successful in your quests remains to be seen... With it's simple, yet effective game mechanics Shadows will have you and your friends scheming, ploting, and playing for hours on end.
Play starts with the King, and then moving to his left each player takes their turn. A turn consists of two phases: Progession of Evil and your great Heroic Act. In the Evil phase you can do one of three things that helps bring the game it's victory: Draw a black/evil card, add a siege engine to the war, or lose a health point. During the Heroic Acts phase you must fight back, to do so requires you to: start a quest, perform a quest specific action, play a special white/good card, heal yourself, or reveal the traitor among you.
Traitor? You ask, didn't I mention? One of the knights that play with you could be a servant of darkness, helping the game to over run Camelot and bring about the demise of his fellows. Secrecy and great trechery are he means, and the traitor only wins if the game wins. It's harder than it sounds, one man against the rest of your fellowship of brave knights... but keep in mind that the game has a will of it's own, and it too is working against you. Every black card you draw brings you one step closer to defeat, while every white card brings the party that much closer to completing one of the eight quests, and to victory.
So grab some friends who have a few hours of spare time, and go back to the time of King Arthur, his knights of the Round Table, and the land of Camelot...
