For 2011 the biggest award in board gaming – the Spiel des Jahres, Germany's "Game of the Year" award – has been given to Susan McKinley Ross' Qwirkle, published in Germany by Schmidt Spiele.
Qwirkle is as simple as matching colors and shapes, but this game also requires tactical maneuvers and well-planned strategy. Earn points by building rows and columns of blocks that share a common shape or color. Look for opportunities to score big by placing a tile that touches multiple pieces with matching attributes.

Qwirkle is a quirky game where you make rows of up to 6 going either by shape or by color. If you go by shape, each tile must be a different color and vise versa. Game play is similar to Scrabble where you build off the grid on your turn allowing you to build off your own moves and your opponents to try and get the most points at once. To do this you draw tiles to bring your hand size to 6 and play as many tiles as you can. Scoring goes by 100s where you get 100 for placing a tile an additional 100 for each tile in the row you’ve built upon. Should you complete a row of 6, this is a quirkle and nets you an additional 600 points. This makes for a lot of strategic playing for 2-4 players, ages 6 and up.
