Game Daze Foothills Mall Employee Review, January 2010
Thomas-
Ticket To Ride is a fun award-winning (2004 Spiel des Jahres, the boardgame equivalent of the Academy Award for Best Film of the Year) game, where you are trying to connect two destinations via train tracks. However, nobody knows which cities you are trying to connect and there’s a limited number of track available, so will inadvertently claim parts of the route you planned on taking. In the game, you have destination cards. These might tell you to complete a route from Los Angeles to Miami. If, at the end of the game, you have claimed a route that can take you from one city to the other (even if it passes through Chicago), you score points for that destination card.
Here’s how the game works: Each turn you do one of three things. Either draw up cards into your hand, play cards from your hand to claim a track, or draw up more destination cards. That’s it.
To claim a track from one city to another, you simply play cards. If you wanted to claim the route from Omaha to Chicago, which has four blue spaces, you have to discard four blue cards. If you only had three blue cards in your hand, you can’t claim that route quite yet. The tension comes in when you see cards that you need to collect coming up in the draw pile—do you draw those cards and claim a track next turn, hoping that nobody will grab the track you want? Or do you complete your route and hope you get the cards you need later?
The game was so much fun, my in-laws extended their vacation with us an extra day so they could play the game some more! Ticket To Ride is a fun forty-five minute game for 2 to 5 players.

Arrowhead Mall Manager Recommendation, March 2009
Bob -
Ticket to Ride is a European strategy game where you try to earn as many points as possible. You get points for laying down new trains across the board to connect cities, and by fulfilling your destination tickets which are two far away cities that you need to get connected. The game play is fast and simple. On your turn you either draw train cards that let you play your trains down, or draw more destinations or playing down a route.
The real fun of the game comes when you try to figure out how to best fulfill your destinations. You have any number of options for how you might want to get Los Angeles connected to New York, the trick is finding the one that will earn you the most points. You also have to be careful not to get stuck without a way to get your destinations done. Once someone has placed their trains on the board, they cannot be moved, and might block your planned path.
The last big twist to the game is you keep your destinations secret from everyone until the end of the game. If you have completed your destinations you get the point value on the card added to your total. If you were unable to complete a destination, you lose that many points instead. This makes it so you never know who is going to be the winner of the game until the absolute end when you start counting out destinations.
Ticket to Ride is a game that I love playing and introducing people to. I have been playing it for over six months and I'm still not tired of it. In fact I'm disappointed if I can't find the time to play it at least once a week. It's a great game to sit down and place once or twice, because it only takes about 45 minutes each time you play.
